MDTA POLICE TARGET DANGEROUS SPEEDS ON I-95

“Speeding Catches Up with You”

Baltimore, Md. (July 29, 2024) – Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Officers conducted high visibility enforcement along I-95 in the Baltimore metropolitan area and northeastern Maryland on Friday in support of a traffic safety effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

MDTA Police Officers conducted 158 traffic stops and issued a combined 267 citations, warnings, and repair orders during the initiative. One person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The effort was in support of NHTSA’s “Speeding Catches Up with You” campaign. According to NHTSA, there were 12,151 fatalities in speeding-related crashes in 2022, and more than 300,000 people were injured. Maryland Transportation Authority Police Officers joined law enforcement officers along the I-95 corridor from Florida to Maine to educate drivers and target dangerously high speeds.

Additional traffic safety initiatives are planned across Maryland throughout the summer travel months. To report dangerous driving on Maryland toll roads, contact MDTA Police Dispatch at 410-537-7911.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a nationally accredited force, is the eighth-largest law enforcement agency in the State with more than 500 sworn and civilian law enforcement professionals. MDTA Police Officers provide law enforcement services at the MDTA’s highways, bridges, and tunnels, at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, and at the Port of Baltimore.

Following unanimous approval from the Board of Public Works, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will begin construction to expand and modernize the MARC train storage facilities at the Martin Maintenance Yard in Baltimore County. Expanding storage capacity at the rail yard is a key component to delivering more frequent service that better serve existing, changing and new travel markets as outlined in the MARC Growth and Transformation Plan.

Hello

The project scope includes increased storage capacity for MARC Trains at the Martin Maintenance Yard (located near Martin State Airport), new tracks with catenary electrification, crossover tracks, a new inspection pit, and equipment that includes water hydrants, air piping extensions and light fixtures to support train car maintenance. The $35 million investment in improvements and increased capacity for the Martin Maintenance Yard is set to begin later this fall, with completion slated for summer 2027. It is supported by a discretionary grant from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program.
