Central Records Unit

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Central Records Unit is the central repository for the collection and timely distribution of motor vehicle accident reports, criminal investigation reports and incident reports.

An official copy of an MDTA police report may be obtained from the Central Records Unit in accordance with Agency policy and the Maryland Public Information Act.

Instructions for Requesting MDTA Police Reports:

Persons may obtain an official copy of a police report in three ways:

  1. You may make your request through the mail. You must first contact the Central Records Unit to check on the availability of the report and the amount of the fees associated with obtaining the report. Then you must download a Report Request Form. Complete the form and mail it with any applicable fees (make check or money order payable to MDTA or Maryland Transportation Authority). Please include a self-addressed, stamped, business-sized envelope with your request and payment. Requests for reports should not be submitted until seven (7) days after the incident date. An official copy of the report will be mailed to you.
  2. You may also obtain a copy of a police report in person at the Central Records Unit during regular business hours (8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday, excluding State Holidays). Please call prior to your arrival to check on the availability of the report and the associated fees. Please wait at least seven (7) days after the date of the incident before calling. All fees must be paid by check or money order at time of receipt. An official copy of the report will be provided to you.
  3. You may also make your request electronically via email. Please provide as much information as possible about the report you are requesting in your email or you may use the Report Request Form. Documents will be provided in Adobe® PDF format to the email address provided. All electronic police report requests will be provided to you free of cost. Requests for reports should not be submitted until seven (7) days after the incident date.

A copy of the MDTA Police Annual Internal Affairs Statistical Analysis can be obtained via the Maryland Public Information Act. Please feel free to contact the MDTA Police Central records Unit using the information below if you have any questions regarding obtaining a copy.

Please note: Larger files, such as Detailed Collision Reports or specialty PIA requests must be mailed and appropriate fees applied to cover search and duplication costs.
