MDTA POLICE RECEIVES NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AWARDS

BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police recently was awarded its fifth Advanced Law Enforcement Re-Accreditation, along with the Award of Excellence and the Meritorious Award, from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). CALEA's accreditation program helps improve the delivery of public-safety services, primarily through a body of standards developed by industry practitioners that cover a wide-range of up-to-date initiatives.

 

"This significant accomplishment for the MDTA Police exemplifies the professionalism and dedication of our officers and civilian staff," said Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn.

 

The Award of Excellence is presented to agencies that conduct a successful Gold Standard Assessment and is in compliance with at least 90% of what CALEA deems "optional" standards. The Meritorious Award is granted to agencies that have been accredited for 15 consecutive years.

 

The MDTA Police is Maryland's first law-enforcement agency to achieve the CALEA TRI-ARC Award of Excellence, which recognizes entities that concurrently hold all three CALEA Accreditation Awards - Law Enforcement, Public Safety Communications and Public Safety Training Academy.

 

"Of all the CALEA law-enforcement agencies nationwide, only 15 accredited agencies currently hold the Tri-Arc Award of Excellence," said MDTA Police Chief Colonel Jerry Jones. "I applaud the efforts of every member of the agency who contributed to our successes during our recent re-accreditation."

 

CALEA was established as an independent accrediting authority in 1979 by four law-enforcement membership associations: the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the National Sheriffs' Association and the Police Executive Research Forum.
