MDTA POLICE ARREST CECIL COUNTY MAN FOR

HIT AND RUN CRASH INVOLVING BICYCLIST ON HATEM BRIDGE

Suspect and Striking Vehicle Located in Elkton

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (February 8, 2024) – Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Officers have arrested an Elkton man for his role in Sunday evening’s crash in which a bicyclist was struck on the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) in Harford County.

At 5:57 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, MDTA Police Officers assigned to the Hatem Bridge Detachment responded to the westbound lanes of the Hatem Bridge for a crash. Responding officers located an adult male bicyclist with non-life-threatening-injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and released. The driver of the striking vehicle did not remain at the scene.

After reviewing evidence including crash debris and video, officers identified a suspect vehicle and potential suspect. Shortly before 1 p.m. yesterday, MDTA Police Officers located the suspect vehicle, a Ford F-250 pickup truck, and the suspect, 53-year-old Elkton resident David A. Adams. Officers took Adams into custody without incident and transported him to the Harford County Detention Center for processing. Adams faces multiple charges related to the crash including Failure to Stop at a Crash Involving Bodily Injury and Negligent Driving.

The MDTA Police encourages anyone who plans to cycle across the Hatem Bridge to read the information here before crossing and reminds drivers to Share the Bridge with bicyclists.

Those charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a nationally accredited force, is the eighth-largest law enforcement agency in the State with more than 500 sworn and civilian law enforcement professionals. MDTA Police Officers provide law enforcement services at the MDTA’s highways, bridges, and tunnels, at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, and at the Port of Baltimore.
