NEW SPLIT TRAFFIC PATTERN ON SOUTHBOUND I-95 IN BALTIMORE THIS WEEK

Automated Speed Enforcement on Northbound I-95 Begins TOMORROW

#i95bmore

WHAT: Southbound I-95 traffic lanes will split with one lane to the left and three lanes to the right between I-395 and Exit 50 (Caton Avenue). During this phase, there is no merge lane on southbound I-95 for the Washington Boulevard on-ramp and for the Caton Avenue exit (Exit 50). Traffic entering southbound I-95 from Washington Boulevard must YIELD.

Southbound I-95

WHEN: Weather permitting, the southbound I-95 split will be in effect by Friday, May 8, for approximately three weeks.

WHY: Toll Dollars At Work: The split traffic patterns and shifts are part of the Maryland Transportation Authoritys (MDTA) two-year, $64 million project to remove and replace the existing concrete deck (riding) surface and roadway joints on mainline I-95 and ramps in Baltimore City.

Beginning Tuesday, May 5, Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) equipment will be deployed on northbound I-95 between Exit 50 (Caton Avenue) and the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Following a 21-day warning period, citations will begin on or about May 26. This equipment will be used to reduce the speed of vehicles in advance of and through the work zone that stretches along approximately five miles of northbound I-95 in Baltimore City. Advanced warning signs are in place prior to the work zone to alert drivers of ASE use, while a speed trailer will display drivers speeds. By law, if a vehicle is recorded as traveling 12 or more mph over the posted speed limit (the posted speed is 50 mph at this location), a $40 fine will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.
