COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION PROJECT BEGINS ON WESTBOUND BAY BRIDGE SUSPENSION SPAN

Submitted by John Sales on

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION PROJECT BEGINS ON WESTBOUND BAY BRIDGE SUSPENSION SPAN

Minimal Impacts to Traffic

WHAT: Crews have begun installing access platforms in various locations along and beneath the westbound Bay Bridge (US 50/301) roadway. The platforms will remain for the duration of the project, reducing the need for frequent lane closures. Off-peak temporary daytime and night-time lane closures will be needed periodically throughout the project.

The MDTA encourages motorists to drive carefully around all work zones. Drivers should pay attention to electronic and static signs for up-to-date traffic patterns.

WHEN: Installation began Monday, Aug. 29, and will continue until October.

WHY: The work is part of the MDTA's $29.6 million rehabilitation project for the westbound Bay Bridge suspension span. The project includes the installation of supplemental cables, rehabilitation of the suspension span superstructure (bridge portion above the roadway) and bearings and priority repairs found during annual inspections. The project is part of the MDTA's $273 million system preservation and safety investment at the Bay Bridge over the next six years. The entire project is expected to be complete in summer 2018.

For 24/7 Bay Bridge traffic information, call 1-877-BAYSPAN (1-877-229-7726) or visit baybridge.com.
