BRIDGE DECK OVERLAY & REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS ON BALTIMORE BELTWAY SOUTH OF KEY BRIDGE

Single-Lane Closures During Off-Peak Hours

BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) announces a $5.5 million bridge deck overlay and repair project for the bridges carrying the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) over Dock Road and CSX Railroad south of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.  This preservation project, funded completely by toll revenue, is part of theMDTA's commitment to preserving and maintaining the State's aging toll bridges, tunnels and highways.

Weather permitting, starting tonight, the I-695 Inner Loop or Outer Loop will be reduced to one lane from Exit 1 (MD 173/Hawkins Point Road) across the Key Bridge to the toll plaza during the following off-peak hours: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning and Friday at 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday.

The off-peak single-lane closures will begin on the Inner Loop first, then on the Outer Loop in about two weeks.  Construction activities on the Inner and Outer Loops will occur simultaneously.  All lanes on I-695 will be open during peak hours.  There will be lane shifts, split traffic and narrow lanes during construction.  The MDTA will update motorists on changing traffic patterns via traffic advisories, social media and mdta.maryland.gov.

Lane closures are expected to end in fall 2015, and the project is anticipated to be complete in fall 2016.  G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc., of York, Pa. will remove and resurface the existing bridge decks using latex modified concrete.  Work also includes repairs to the bridge parapets, substructure and slope protection.  A bio-swale will be constructed within the project limits.  Bio-swales are landscaped, linear filters that carry stormwater runoff, provide water quality treatment and decrease flow.

Motorists should pay attention to portable and overhead electronic signs and static signs for up-to-date travel information.  For information on the MDTA's other facility preservation projects, or to view real-time traffic camera images on MDTA roadways, visit mdta.maryland.gov.  For real-time updates on major incidents follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/TheMDTA.  Find us on Facebook at facebook.com/TheMDTA

Serious About Safety: State Highway Administration's Commitment to Safer Roads

This month’s Serious About Safety message comes from State Highway Administrator (SHA) Will Pines, who highlights SHA’s continued commitment to building a strong safety culture and supporting MDOT’s overall safety mission. As we move through the summer travel season, roads across Maryland are busier than usual, making it especially important to stay alert, plan ahead, and make safe choices behind the wheel.

July is Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month, a reminder that anyone can find themselves stopped along the side of the road unexpectedly, whether due to a disabled vehicle, a crash, emergency responders, or maintenance crews. In these situations, drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert, and move over when it is safe to do so. Learn more about Maryland’s Move Over Law, roadside safety, and real-time traffic updates through SHA’s CHART (Coordinated Highways Action Response Team) and MDTA's Bay Bridge website.
