MDTA POLICE URGE WITNESSES TO COME FORWARD FROM WEDNESDAY'S ARMORED CAR CASH SPILL IN HARBOR TUNNEL
Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office Offers Immunity for Those Returning Cash within 48 Hours

MD Transportation Authority Police detectives are urging anyone with information regarding Wednesday night's incident in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895) to come forward. The Baltimore City State's Attorney has indicated that anyone who may have taken cash that spilled into the tunnel can return it to the MDTA Police by 5 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, without facing criminal prosecution.

Contact the MDTA Police immediately at 410-537-1208 or email mdtadetectiveunit@mdta.state.md.us

At approximately 7:40 p.m. Wednesday night, a Brinks armored vehicle was traveling in the southbound Harbor Tunnel when its rear doors opened, spilling cash inside the tunnel. All I-895 traffic was detoured for clean-up, and the tunnel reopened at approximately 3:40 a.m. today.

Preliminary information suggests the armored vehicle's door security malfunctioned, leading to the incident. Several motorists cooperated with police at the scene; however, the early investigation indicates that not all of the money under transport was recovered. This dollar amount is not publicly
available due to the ongoing investigation.

Those who do not take advantage of this offer of immunity will be pursued on charges of theft.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a nationally accredited force, is the
seventh-largest law-enforcement agency in the State, with more than 600 sworn and
civilian law-enforcement professionals. MDTA Police officers provide law
enforcement at the Authority's highways, bridges and tunnels; at the
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport; and at the Port of
Baltimore.
NOTE: If you choose to use an acronym, please refer to Maryland Transportation
Authority as MDTA Police. Thank you.
