MDTA POLICE INVESTIGATING

CRASH ON I-95 IN BALTIMORE CITY

Witnesses Asked to Call 410-537-1209

BALTIMORE, Md. (December 5, 2024) –The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred early today in Baltimore City. At approximately 6 a.m., MDTA Police Officers assigned to the Central Command Detachment responded to the southbound lanes of I-95 prior to the entrance to the Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Responding officers located a white tractor trailer which had struck the divider separating the southbound tubes. The crash caused the tractor to catch fire, which spread to the trailer. The trailer was carrying vegetables and other produce.

Personnel from the Baltimore City and Baltimore County Fire Departments responded to the crash and treated the driver of the tractor trailer for minor injuries. Fire department personnel also assisted with the cleanup of fuel that leaked from the tractor trailer following the crash.

The MDTA Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit responded to the crash and continues to investigate. The right tube partially reopened at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the MDTA Police at 410-537-1209.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a nationally accredited force, is the eighth-largest law enforcement agency in the State with more than 500 sworn and civilian law enforcement professionals. MDTA Police Officers provide law enforcement services at the MDTA’s highways, bridges, and tunnels, at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, and at the Port of Baltimore.

Following unanimous approval from the Board of Public Works, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will begin construction to expand and modernize the MARC train storage facilities at the Martin Maintenance Yard in Baltimore County. Expanding storage capacity at the rail yard is a key component to delivering more frequent service that better serve existing, changing and new travel markets as outlined in the MARC Growth and Transformation Plan.

Hello

The project scope includes increased storage capacity for MARC Trains at the Martin Maintenance Yard (located near Martin State Airport), new tracks with catenary electrification, crossover tracks, a new inspection pit, and equipment that includes water hydrants, air piping extensions and light fixtures to support train car maintenance. The $35 million investment in improvements and increased capacity for the Martin Maintenance Yard is set to begin later this fall, with completion slated for summer 2027. It is supported by a discretionary grant from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program.
