OFF-PEAK TEMPORARY LANE CLOSURES TO OCCUR ON HATEM BRIDGE (US 40) FOR FIRST PHASE OF PAINTING PROJECT

STAY ALERT & SLOW DOWN in work zones

Bicyclists are not permitted on bridge during lane closures

No scheduled lane closures on Sundays to allow bicycle access

WHAT: Work on the first phase of a rehabilitation project, which includes painting of the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40), requires off-peak temporary lane closures on the bridge to accommodate construction equipment and provide safe conditions for workers. One lane will remain open in each direction throughout the duration of the project.

WHAT bicyclists need to know: For the safety of bicyclists and motorists, bicycles are not permitted to travel on the Hatem Bridge when a lane closure is in place. During the first phase of construction, lane closures are scheduled on Saturdays, however all lanes will remain open on Sundays to allow bicycle access. Bicyclists may use a taxi or ride share to cross the bridge.

More information, including a monthly schedule of anticipated lane closures and cycling FAQs, can be found on the Hatem Bridge Bicycle Access webpage.

WHEN: Weather permitting, temporary lane closures can be expected Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. beginning the week of February 19, 2024. This schedule is subject to change as the project progresses to future phases. The project is anticipated to be complete in May 2026.

WHY: Toll Dollars at Work. This work and related lane closures are part of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) investment to preserve its roadways and structures across the State.
