MDTA POLICE ANNOUNCE ARREST FOLLOWING

NON-CONTACT SHOOTING ON BAY BRIDGE

Subject Faces Weapons, Assault and DUI Charges

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (July 17, 2024) – Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Officers arrested an Anne Arundel County man this morning following a non-contact shooting that occurred on the Bay Bridge in Queen Anne’s County in June.

During the investigation, MDTA Police Officers assigned to the Bay Bridge Detachment and the Criminal Investigations Unit learned that the driver of a black Jeep fired multiple shots toward a silver Mitsubishi while driving recklessly across the westbound span at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. The driver of the Jeep then exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at the driver of the Mitsubishi.

Investigators identified 41-year-old Melvin Clark of Severn as a suspect. After a thorough investigation, officers obtained an arrest warrant charging Clark with first degree assault, reckless endangerment, driving a vehicle while impaired by alcohol and other charges. Officers arrested Clark on the warrant this morning, and Clark was transported to the Jennifer Road Detention Center without incident.

Those charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a nationally accredited force, is the eighth-largest law enforcement agency in the State with more than 500 sworn and civilian law enforcement professionals. MDTA Police Officers provide law enforcement services at the MDTA’s highways, bridges, and tunnels, at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, and at the Port of Baltimore.

Following unanimous approval from the Board of Public Works, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will begin construction to expand and modernize the MARC train storage facilities at the Martin Maintenance Yard in Baltimore County. Expanding storage capacity at the rail yard is a key component to delivering more frequent service that better serve existing, changing and new travel markets as outlined in the MARC Growth and Transformation Plan.

Hello

The project scope includes increased storage capacity for MARC Trains at the Martin Maintenance Yard (located near Martin State Airport), new tracks with catenary electrification, crossover tracks, a new inspection pit, and equipment that includes water hydrants, air piping extensions and light fixtures to support train car maintenance. The $35 million investment in improvements and increased capacity for the Martin Maintenance Yard is set to begin later this fall, with completion slated for summer 2027. It is supported by a discretionary grant from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program.
